Advanced PGA Professional
As a player I have represented 3 counties, Dublin, Wicklow and Waterford. I have also represented Leinster and Ireland many times and I was on winning Interprovincial teams. I have won many Leinster and National pennants with school and Interclub golf.
In 1995 I went to East Tennessee State University on a golf scholarship. We were ranked number 1 in the NCAA IN 1996. As a professional I represented Team Ireland for 3 years.
I’ve been teaching and coaching for 20 years, and in this time i have constantly reflected on my coaching practice, and i have evolved to where i am today. In 2008 I was awarded Top Coach in the U.K and Ireland, for finishing 1st in the final year examinations, with a 98% mark. In 2014 I was one of the first in Ireland to be awarded the ASQ Level 3 Coaching Qualification. In 2014 the PGA recognised my continued learning and evolution in my coaching craft, with the accolade of ‘Advanced PGA Professional’. In June 2016 i completed a two year Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Coaching, From the University of Birmingham.
My coaching philosophy is akin to the saying “give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for life”. This philosophy sees the ‘coach’ help and support the golfer to develop skills that will see them learn when the teacher is not there. I also believe, people play golf for many different reasons. Each individual is different, and therefore, the coach must be adaptable to their individual needs. I also believe in ‘function over style’, whereby the golfer may not have the time to change their golfswing pattern, but can improve through a more ‘functional’ approach to the game.
Make your practice more game like. Use ‘specificity’ which sets up the practice as real to GOLF (1 ball scenario) and not ROLF (range golf) 50 ball scenario.
